The recipe for success all year for the defending league champions has been the same: pitch well and win. Thursday night was no exception, as the Braves got shutout pitching from four pitchers en-route to a 2-0 win over the Chatham Anglers.
Will Jolin (1-2; UConn) got the start and pitched five innings, earning the win while striking out nine and scattering five hits. But it was the bullpen who again got the job done Thursday. Logan Billbrough (William and Mary) and Thomas Kahnle (Lynn) each threw a shutout inning. Tony Zych (Louisville) closed the door for a two-inning save, his fifth of the year.
With their second consecutive shutout, Braves pitching has now fired twenty consecutive shutout innings, dating back to the eighth inning of Monday's game at Wareham.
"We have confidence in our abilities, and we think we're one of the tougher staffs in the league" pitching coach Josh MacDonald said. "It's nice to get a nice performance by Jolin and hey, we're ready to roll out four more innings of solid bullets at you. Makes the job a little easier".
Bourne had plenty of opportunities to score, but it took an RBI single by Tommy LaStella (Coastal Carolina) in the fifth to push across the first run, scoring Parker Brunelle (Florida State) as the eventual game-winner. The Braves tacked on an unearned insurance run in the eighth when the second error of the inning by Anglers shortstop Stephen Perez allowed Jason Coats (TCU) to score.
Chatham had their best chance to score in the fifth, when they loaded the bases with one out on two singles and a walk. But Jolin, nearing the end of his day, induced a flyout to shallow left before striking out Rick Oropesa on a 3-2 pitch to end the threat. After that the bullpen cruised, locking down the
Greg Larson (0-2; Florida) gave up one run and eight hits over 6 innings to take the tough-luck loss for the Anglers.
Daniel Bowman (Coastal Carolina) left the game before his second at-bat, after slicing his hand open while stealing second in the second inning.
Bourne moves to 12-10 with the win, while Chatham drops to 11-9-1. Bourne hits the road Friday to Cotuit and Saturday to Chatham, before returning to Doran park Sunday to host the Orleans Firebirds. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30.
