Braves Defeat Hyannis Hawks

What started off as a pitcher's duel between Bourne's Grayson Garvin and Hyannis's Tyler Ray turned out to be an offensive showing for the Braves as they defeated the Harbor Hawks 6-0 at Doran Park Wednesday night.
The scoring started early for the Braves when the speedy Scott Woodward (Coastal Carolina) drew a walk in the top of the first inning. Designated hitter Zack MacPhee (Arizona State) grounded out in a hit and run situation which advanced Woodward into scoring position. While third baseman Travis Shaw (Kent State) was taking his turn at the plate, Woodward attempted to steal third but after a throwing error at third by Hyannis catcher Dan Sheppard (Iowa), Woodward was able to score easily.
The Braves would go on to score again in the inning. After Shaw lined one into leftfield for a double, he was brought home by a single from right fielder Daniel Bowman (Coastal Carolina). The scoring would continue for Bourne in the bottom of the 6th.
The inning started with Scott Woodward striking out, but the end result of the inning would make up for that. DH Zack MacPhee was pinch hit for by Tommy LaStella (Coastal Carolina) who would go on to draw a walk and reach third after left fielder Jason Coats (TCU) ripped a ball into left. Travis Shaw brought LaStella in from third with a single on the ensuing play.
Then something awkward happened in the inning. Bourne right fielder Bowman stepped up to the plate and blasted the ball straight to Harbor Hawks third baseman Matt Williams (Libertry). Williams, who apparently was handcuffed by the play allowed Coats to score from third.
The Braves would go on to score two more times in the game, once in bottom of the sixth after a Nick Ahmed single and again in the eighth to complete the scoring at 6.
As high as this score seemed to be for this Braves team, this game seemed destined to be a decent pitching matchup. Braves starter Grayson Garvin (Vanderbilt) struck out six in the course of 6 2/3 innings allowing no runs during that span. Hyannis starter Tyler Ray (Troy) may have given up six runs in the span of six innings, but he was able to strike out five Braves batters.
When Bourne reliever R.J. Alvarez (Florida Atlantic) came into the game in the top of the seventh, there was a man on first and second with two outs. But, Alvarez composed himself striking out Hyannis batter Jason Nappi (Harding) to end the inning. Alvarez struck out 3 in the game.
With the victory tonight, the Braves are just one game over .500 and hope to continue their winning ways against the Chatham Anglers Thursday night at 6PM.
