Growing up in Arizona, infielder Zack MacPhee had one of the country's most notable collegiate baseball schools at his finger tips. But it wasn't until 2008 that MacPhee and his parents, Frank and Holly, would hear the good news: he was accepted to Arizona State University.
"It's a good baseball school," MacPhee said. "I like it there."
And no doubt Arizona head coach Tim Esmay - who finished first season as head coach - can say the same about MacPhee.
Coming off his sophomore season, MacPhee earned Pac-10 'Player of the Year' honors and was named the 'District IX Player of the Year' by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
MacPhee led the Devils with 64 RBIs and set an ASU record with 14 triples on the season, he finished the year with a .389 batting average, second in the Pac-10.
During the College World Series MacPhee didn't get much time to show off his skills on the infield. ASU lost 6-3 to Clemson in game one and 11-4 to South Carolina, who went on to win the championship series, in round two.
After Arizona failed to advance in the series, MacPhee made his way to Bourne to play his second season under field manager Harvey Shapiro.
"It's awesome," MacPhee said. "I like playing here a lot."
Last summer, MacPhee helped the Braves sweep the Orleans Firebirds and Cotuit Kettleers to end a 44-year championship drought and bring Bourne its first cape league title since the 1965 Sagamore Canalmen.
MacPhee hopes to repeat last season's results and move back to Arizona with another championship ring.
