The Braves lost a heartbreaker to their Western Division rival the Falmouth Commodores 5-2 Monday night at Doran Park.
Things didn't start out to well for the Braves. Leadoff man Kyle Von Tungeln (TCU) for Falmouth was able to reach on a single which was grounded to Braves shortstop Nick Ahmed (UConn) who couldn't the make a play at first. Tungeln proceeded to steal second and eventually third after the passed ball by Josh Elander (TCU). Tungeln was able to score easily after Commodore right fielder Nick Martini grounded out to first.
Despite the early troubles the game was kept close by Braves starter Anthony Meo (Coastal Carolina) who struck out four and allowed one run in the course of five innings. The Braves offense was able to get him offensive help in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs which seemed to be all the Braves would need for a victory.
Shortstop Nick Ahmed led off the fourth by drawing a walk. Braves centerfielder Jason Coats (TCU) ripped one into left past the diving Commodore third baseman B.A. Vollmuth (Southern Mississippi) which advanced Ahmed to third. After right fielder Daniel Bowman (Coastal Carolina) lined out to the diving Kyle Van Tungeln, Ahmed was able to tag up and score from third and tie the game at one.
During Travis Shaw's (Kent State) at bat Coats stole second and would go on to score when Shaw ripped one into right for a double to put the Braves up 2-1. Things went pretty smoothly for the Braves for a couple of innings. But in the eighth things began to unravel.
Relief pitcher Thomas Kahnle (Lynn) only faced two batters during the inning, walking Falmouth right fielder Nick Martini (Kansas State) while giving up a ground rule double to Commodore designated hitter Andrew Susac (Oregon State). In came Braves closer Tony Zych who has been flawless for the Braves all season, until tonight.
Zych (Louisville) would get Falmouth first baseman Matt Skole(Georgia Tech) to strike out swinging, but when catcher Chris O'Brien (Wichita State) laid down a bunt, Zych was charged with an error while trying to throw out Martini at home. The Commodores scored easily to tie things up at two.
Things got even more disastrous for Zych when he gave up the three run bomb to left fielder Barrett Barnes (Texas Tech) which put the Commodores up by three.
Bourne would need a rally to win, but it never came and the Commodores cruised to victory 5-2.
With the loss tonight the Braves are 17-17 on the season while the Commodores improved to 14-19. The next game will tomorrow night in a double header against the Chatham Anglers in Chatham. First game starts at 4PM. The next home game for the Braves will be a double header scheduled for 2PM Sunday at Doran Park when they will face Harwich.
