Braves Offense Slowed By Firebirds

A phenomenal pitcher's duel went against Bourne on Sunday, as Orleans Firebirds pitcher Ryan Carpenter took a no-hitter into the ninth inning to help knock off the Braves 3-1 at Doran Park.
Ryan Carpenter (3-0; Gonzaga) pitched phenomenally for Orleans, giving up his first hit to the leadoff hitter in the ninth, pinch-hitter Creede Simpson (Auburn). Carpenter struck out nine with only two walks over eight plus innings of work, throwing 125 pitches. Will Jolin (1-4; UConn) took the loss for the Braves but pitched well. Jolin gave up two runs but only allowed two hits, both in the sixth inning, along with three walks and two strikeouts.
Scott Woodward plated Simpson in the ninth with a sacrifice fly off Firebirds closer Marcus Stromon (Duke), who retired all three batters he faced for his eighth save. Mike Nemeth (UConn) and Josh Elander (TCU) were the only other baserunners for the Braves, both reaching on walks.
Both teams took no-hitters into the sixth inning, but the Firebirds were able to chase Jolin from the game. Steve Selsky (Arizona) broke the scoreless tie with an RBI double, and came around to score on a Riccio Torrez (Arizona State) single. But all-star RJ Alvarez (Florida Atlantic) was able to get out of the jam to limit the damage.
The Firebirds added an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI double by Ronnie Shaeffer (UC Irvine) off of Kevin Brady (Clemson). Brady struck out three in two innings of relief, while Michael Dimock (Wake Forest) struck out two in a perfect ninth.
Bourne gets right back to the grind tomorrow, hosting the Falmouth Commodores with first pitch scheduled for 6:00.
