Bourne Can't Find Offense, Falls to Hyannis

Pitching and defense betrayed the Braves, as the Hyannis Harbor Hawks scored early and often en route to a 7-1 win at Doran Park.
Hyannis, tied for last in the league in hitting coming into the night, exploded for 7 runs on 12 hits, while Bourne's defense helped with three errors, leading to three unearned runs. The Harbor Hawks had runners on base in every inning during their consistent offensive attack. Casey McElroy (Auburn) provided two RBIs, and both leadoff hitter John Ruettiger (Arizona State) and Mark Micowski (Georgia State) provided three hits.
Will Jolin (1-3; Virginia) took the loss, lasting only 3.1 innings. Cole Cook (1-0; Pepperdine) won for the Harbor Hawks in his first appearance of the season.
Bourne took an early lead after Scott Woodward (Coastal Carolina) walked to lead off the bottom half of the first, advanced to second on a Zack Macphee single, stole third and scored on a wild pitch. But Cook was largely dominant after that, striking out 7 over his five innings of work and not surrendering another walk after Woodward's. Hyannis's bullpen followed suit, pitching four one-hit innings to close out the game.
Jolin was strong through the first three innings, but things unraveled quickly in the fourth. The first four batters reached against him, including an RBI single by Harbor Hawks catcher Dan Sheppard (Iowa). After a groundout, Jolin got a ground ball to Travis Shaw at third, but Shaw couldn't field it cleanly and threw it away trying to force the runner at the plate. The error led to two unearned runs in the inning, three in all, and Jolin's day was done.
After escaping the jam in the fourth, Chance Sossamon (Wichita State) allowed a run on a wild pitch in the fifth. Logan Billbrough (William and Mary) threw two impressive innings, and R.C. Orlan (UNC) allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits in an inning of work. Mike Dimock (Wake Forest) pitched a scoreless ninth.
The Braves (14-13) dropped into a tie for first place with Cotuit after the loss and the Kettleers 8-4 win against Harwich. Bourne finishes a three-game homestand Saturday with a contest against the rival Wareham Gatemen, with first pitch scheduled for 5:30.
