The Brewster Whitecaps defeated the Bourne Braves, 3-2, in a battle between first place teams.
The Western Conference leading Braves could not drive in runners in scoring position, leaving the bases loaded three times in the game, as well as stranding the tying run at third base in the eighth inning.
Neither team got length from their starting pitchers, each lasting only three and a third innings. Austin Stadler gave up two earned runs on three hits in limited work for Bourne. His counterpart Austin Lubinsky only allowed one run, but was tagged for six hits.
The Whitecaps, who lead the Eastern Division, jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Drew Martinez led the off the game with a walk and a stolen base, and was followed by an infield bunt single from Nathan Melendres. After a stolen base from Melendres, both he and Martinez scored on RBI groundouts to give the Whitecaps a 2-0 lead.
The Braves would get a run back in the bottom half of the third when Zach MacPhee scored on an RBI sacrifice fly from Tommy LaStella, cutting Brewster‘s lead to 2-1. MacPhee reached third on an error to lead off the inning when a deep fly ball to right field was misplayed.
The Whitecaps got the run back in the top of the fourth on a throwing error from catcher Josh Elander, giving Brewster a 3-1 lead. With runners on first and second, Elander’s throw following a wild pitch went into left field, allowing both runners an additional base.
The lead was cut to 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth when Braves shortstop Nick Ahmed singled, stole a base, and scored with two outs. Ahmed scored on a two out double down the left field line from MacPhee. MacPhee then advanced to third on a balk, but was left stranded following a groundout from LaStella.
The Whitecaps improve to 18-8 on the season, and continue to lead the Eastern Division with 34 points. The Braves fall to 13-12 on the season(26 points). The Braves are next in action Wednesday in Hyannis, and play their next home game on Thursday against Cotuit, who is currently in second place behind Bourne. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
