Maness Star of Game Two Victory
Aug 9, 2009
Author: Joseph Thompson, Bourne Braves Intern

When it mattered most the Braves came together collectively to defeat the Orleans Firebirds 8-0 to advance to the championship series against the winner of tomorrows Y-D Red Sox vs. Cotuit Kettleers match up. In the regular season the Braves were winless against the Firebirds, but after gaining the momentum in yesterday's amazing comeback, the Braves were riding high.

The player of game two of this playoff series is the same person that carried a perfect game into the top of the eighth inning on July 26th, Seth Maness (East Carolina). Maness pitched six shutout innings in the victory.

But advancing to the championship game doesn't happen without some run support.

In the top of the third, Orleans pitcher Jimmy Reyes (Elon) beaned second baseman Pierre LePage (UConn). That would come back to haunt Reyes after LePage stole second and was driven home on a Kyle Roller (East Carolina) single to put the Braves up one to nil.

In the sixth, LePage swung for the fences and drove out his first homer of the year to put the Braves ahead by 2. Reyes then proceeded to plunk the MVP (Kyle Roller) and give up a single to last night's player of the game Stefen Romero (Oregon State).

That would force Reyes out of the game for reliever Cole Cook(Pepperdine) who sacrificed a run to Ben Klafczynski (Kent State) on a single which scored Roller from third for the third time of the game. The Braves would score three more times in the sixth and two more times in the top of the 8th and 9th innings.

Frankly, choosing the player of the game for the Braves in a total team effort is close to impossible. But the honor has to go to Seth Manness who kept the bats quiet for Bourne through six solid innings.

The championship series for the Braves will start on Tuesday against either the Y-D Red Sox or the Cotuit Kettleers.

If the Red Sox defeat the Kettleers, the first game will be held at Red Wilson Field because they have the most points (57) in the Cape League compared to the Braves (52). They also have the better record (28-15-1) compared to Bourne (25-17-2).

If the Kettleers advance to the finals then the first game will be held at Doran Park as the Braves have won their division and have earned home-field advantage for the playoffs.
