One man can't win a championship on his own. It usually takes a team effort to take down the opposition and nowhere is it more evident than in a team sport like baseball.
The Bourne Braves are the embodiment of the word team. Whether you got a key homer from the Cape League MVP Kyle Roller (East Carolina) or a stolen base that lead to a run from either Pierre LePage (UConn) or Scott Woodward (Coastal Carolina), everyone on the 2009 Braves roster deserves to be recognized as players of the game or more importantly 2009 Cape League Champions.
The Braves outlasted the Cotuit Kettleers 5-1 to clinch the first ever championship since the teams inception.
While Pierre LePage seems to be the clear choice for the player of the game, delivering two RBIs in the third which put the Braves up 2-1, it's hard to overlook the team effort which got the Braves to the championship in the first place.
The team finished the season with the best record in the Western Division. They beat Orleans twice in a row, a team they failed to gain a victory over all season including a dramatic walk-off in the bottom of the ninth. They also swept each team they faced throughout the postseason.
The teams' motto for the playoffs was, "believe," and I think that all the players came together into believing that they could become champions of the 2009 season.
So, the consensus is clear, the 2009 Cape League Champion Bourne Braves are the players of the game.
