Braves Clean Up In 2003 Draft

NEW YORK, NY — All totalled, the Cape Cod Baseball League once again placed its firm mark on the Major League First Year Player Draft, when last week 146 former Cape League stars were selected by Major League franchises to join the ranks of professional baseball.

      The Bourne Braves, increasingly popular with Upper Cape and off-Cape fans, boasted two of nine Cape Leaguers selected in the first round and 10 players altogether.

      More than half of the Cape Leaguers selected in the draft – 74 – were selected in the top 10 rounds. Last year, only 65 Cape Leaguers were taken in the top 10 rounds. In 2002, MLB franchises selected seven Cape Leaguers in the first round, in contrast with nine taken this year in the first round and two of the top of five players selected overall. Last year, the Cape League was not represented until Drew Meyer ( South Carolina ) was taken by Texas with the 10th overall pick.

      The first former Braves' player selected in this year's draft were Brian Anderson and Conor Jackson (first round), followed closely by 2002 all-star right-handed relief ace Chris Ray (Wm. & Mary) who was taken with the 74th overall pick by the Baltimore Orioles organization.

      Trey Webb (Baylor), who was the West Division's all-star shortstop last summer, was the fourth Braves' player selected (Round 5/147th pick), followed by catcher David Castillo (Oral Roberts) and in Round 19, Matt Tolbert (554th overall pick) who was selected by the Baltimore Orioles.

      Tolbert, projected to play shortstop this season for the Bourne Braves, arrived at Coady Field this week in top shape after a successful recovery from a knee injury early last season.

      Mike Dennison (Wichita State), who pitched brilliantly for Bourne in the 2001 campaign and was a CCBL all-star, followed soon after Tolbert when he was taken by the Boston Red Sox in the 21st round with the 624th overall selection.

      Behind Dennison was Dane Bubela, one of Bourne's top players last season, Ben Rowe (Oregon State), Jared Theodorakos (Baylor) and two-time Cape League all-star righthander Matt Brown from UC-Berkeley.
